In my foundational assessment on Immigration, I laid out the systemic failures driving the border crisis. Today, I am diving deep into Failure #3: The Underground Labor Magnet, and why shutting down the shadow economy is a mandatory component of border security.
As a reminder, my approach is based on the following Operating Principles:
Immigration is about what the U.S. economy needs. We are a mature enterprise, not a startup; we must hire to fill strategic gaps.
Security and immigration are a dual mandate. We require the outcome of a secure, strictly managed border via “Defense in Depth” (internal controls supporting perimeter security).
A parallel shadow economy is unacceptable. We cannot tolerate an undocumented economy that undercuts domestic wages and enriches cartels and human traffickers.

Deconstructing the Problem - My Opinion
Politicians love to frame the border strictly as an enforcement issue. In reality, the drivers of migration over the last 50 years are complex, ranging from refugees of lost wars (Nicaragua) and cartel violence (El Salvador) to pure economics. While we cannot control geopolitical crises, we can control our internal economic lure: the demand for off-the-books labor.
Potential Solutions - My Opinion
Border security is a required outcome; the method used to achieve it should never be treated as a political goal in itself. Instead of relying on bumper sticker slogans about building a coast-to-coast wall, I approach the border with a strict cost-benefit analysis.
If we eliminate the incentive for illegal entry by mandating E-Verify, we instantly remove massive pressure from the physical border. Cartels do not care about the people being trafficked; they care about getting paid. If unauthorized immigrants cannot get a job once they arrive, we starve the cartels of a massive revenue stream.
The Path Forward
The outrage machine relies on your exhaustion. Extremists are locked in a battle of “my way or nothing,” betting that the rest of us, who are just trying to pay bills, raise families, and secure our retirements, will eventually tune out and let them run the show.
This blog, Really Independent, is built on the opposite assumption. We have to start fixing this somewhere, so it may as well be here. Every week, I will strip away the partisan noise, lay out the corroborating facts, and focus strictly on viable solutions.
But a republic is not a spectator sport, and neither is this community. I don’t expect you to agree with every solution I’ve proposed above. Instead, I want you to stress-test them.
