In my foundational assessment of Immigration, I established an interwoven system of “Defense in Depth” solutions: E-Verify 2.0 to shut down the shadow economy, and a Guest Worker program to manage the legal labor supply. Today, I address the physical perimeter itself.
The outrage machine thrives on the physical border because it makes for great television. The hard right demands a 2,000-mile concrete wall, viewing it as the ultimate magic bullet. The hard left dismisses strict border enforcement entirely, equating physical security with a lack of compassion. Both extremes are wrong.
As a reminder, my approach is based on the following Operating Principles:
Methods vs. Outcomes. A secure, strictly managed border is a non-negotiable outcome. A “wall” is simply a vendor tool. We must evaluate border tools based on cost-benefit analysis, not campaign slogans.
Defense in Depth. Physical security cannot hold if the internal economic magnet remains turned on. Without internal controls (E-Verify) and authorized pathways (Guest Worker visas), a border rapidly devolves into endless, costly militarization.
The 360-Degree Threat. Border security is a national issue. Smugglers, human traffickers, and foreign agents are highly adaptable; they will exploit any geographical vulnerability, including the Northern border, to bypass our controls.
Let’s look at the baseline facts of our current border security reality.
Deconstructing the Problem - My Opinion
Trying to solve a systemic economic crisis using only tactical, military-grade border gear is the most expensive and least effective way to manage risk. I base this diagnosis on three specific system failures:
Potential Solutions - My Opinion
The hard left must understand that a sovereign republic cannot exist without a strictly managed perimeter; true compassion does not mean funding human traffickers through open borders. The hard right must understand that you cannot secure a perimeter with a concrete wall if the economic lure of an underground labor market still exists.
We must implement a true “Defense in Depth” strategy to get to a real solution.
The Path Forward
The outrage machine relies on your exhaustion. Extremists are locked in a battle of “my way or nothing,” betting that the rest of us, who are just trying to pay bills, raise families, and secure our retirements, will eventually tune out and let them run the show.
This blog, Really Independent, is built on the opposite assumption. We have to start fixing this somewhere, so it may as well be here. Every week, I will strip away the partisan noise, lay out the corroborating facts, and focus strictly on viable solutions.
But a republic is not a spectator sport, and neither is this community. I don’t expect you to agree with every solution I’ve proposed above. Instead, I want you to stress-test them. Review the proposals and tell me what you think. Where is the logic flawed? What systemic realities are missing from this baseline? If you had to choose just one of the reforms above to pass tomorrow, which one creates the most stability?
Add your professional and life experience to the discussion. Just know that all comments here are moderated strictly for common courtesy and actual substance, leave the trolls at the door.
Let’s stop shouting and start solving. Welcome to Really Independent.
